The trailer for Magical Destroyers already had me super excited for this original series. I had assumed most anime fans were also excited, but with lower-than-average ratings for the first episode, I was concerned that it may not live up to the hype the trailer created.
My concerns were quickly put at ease when I watched episode 1. Straight away we’re hit with a cool guitar riff as the members of the otaku resistance are about to jump out of a blimp. It was at this point that my fiancé looked away from his game of Lego Starwars and started watching too.
The art style is the initial hook. Colours and lines reminiscent of fantastic series like Kill la Kill and FLCL, you really get the edgy 2000s anime vibe from it.
Being an original series, the plot of Magical Destroyers is out there. In episode 1, the main character, Otaku Hero goes to his local nerd store to buy some nerd shit but sees that the whole store has been cleared of stock. The cause is huge armed soldiers wearing hella cute mascot faces. They’re from the SSC and have come to destroy any and all signs of Otaku culture under the pretense that otaku are a species to be protected.
From there, Otaku hero bands together a group of the surviving otaku, including a red-haired girl named Anarchy. But after 3 years of fighting with no results, Otaku Hero is done. He decides to give up being the leader of the Otaku survivors and Anarchy takes over.
As Anarchy is trying to lead the group to safety, the SSC begin to attack their headquarters. Seeing her struggle, Otaku Hero steps up and retakes his throne as the leader of the group and helps to strengthen the morale of the other otaku.
So far I’m obsessed with the premise and the art. Let’s not forget the banger ED either.
As of episode 1, I definitely recommend Magical Destroyers.
