Review: Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai!
Adapted from the 2017 Manga by Wakame Konbu (Saikin Yatotta Maid ga Ayashii), Jahy-sama wa Kujikenai! is a 20 episode series from SILVER LINK. studios (Non Non Biyori and Kokoro Connect). The series centres around Jahy - the self-proclaimed second-in-command of the Dark Realm. The mana crystal keeping the Dark Realm intact was destroyed by the Magical Girl, subsequently destroying the Dark Realm with most of its inhabitants. Jahy, Druj and Saurva made it to Earth safely, but as far as we know, they're the only ones.
The three of them work to find the remains of the mana crystal scattered all over Earth in an attempt to restore the Dark Realm.
They all go their own ways, and we see glimpses of their lives throughout the series. Druj becomes the CEO of her own successful company and is easily able to find mana crystals with the resources she has. When she comes into contact with Jahy, her masochistic side comes out and she often begs Jahy to scold her.
Meanwhile, Saurva, who was once in competition with Jahy for her position in the Dark Realm, continues to try and best Jahy while in the human world - albeit unsuccessfully.
Finally, Jahy struggles in the human world. With no money and nowhere to live, she is taken in by Ryo and her sister, the manager of an izakaya. They give her an apartment to rent and a job as a waitress. Hilarity ensues as she struggles to find her place in the human world while failing to find mana crystals and regain her position
as a powerful, magical being.
The series, at the time of writing, has a score of 7.09 on MyAnimeList. This is considered to be a low score, but for a series that definitely had too many episodes, it's not too surprising.
The series has a strong start, turning the concept of the isekai on its head. Only when it gets past the 12-13 episode mark does it become a chore to watch. Comedy anime with a basic episode-to-episode plot structure needs to be a one-cour anime. If it goes beyond this, the themes become boring and repetitive. I found it harder and harder to laugh at each episode as I slogged through episodes 14-20. I ended up being behind on the release schedule of the series because the thought of watching it for the last 6 episodes was exhausting in itself.
Jahy-sama isn't a bad anime series. It has entertaining characters and is definitely a comfy series in it's own right. If you're planning on watching it - binge it. It'll be enjoyable as a background binge anime. But watching it week-to-week was slow and definitely something I didn't look forward to.
