The Disastrous Life of Saiki K., known affectionately as Saiki K. is an offbeat comedy anime series that aired in Summer 2016 and was animated by studios J.C. Staff and Egg Firm. The series was extremely well-received and is often heard as a recommendation to new anime fans and fans of series such as Mob Psycho 100, One Punch Man, and Nichijou.
The series follows a pink-haired psychic named Saiki Kusuo, who has a range of supernatural abilities, but finds them to be more of a nuisance than a gift. He is often put into situations that require him to - begrudgingly - use his powers, despite him wanting to live a normal and quiet life.
The main thing stopping him from living his ideal life is the cast of quirky characters that back him up. His lovey-dovey parents, his empty-headed 'pal' Nendou, the deranged Shun Kaido and the fired-up athlete, Hairo, to name a few. The characterisation of the series points out the irony of Saiki being the most 'normal' despite having numerous psychic abilities, but also brings to light the idea of normalcy being not only a human concept, but something that can look different to everyone.
The series as a whole is easy to watch due to its laidback themes and combination of deadpan and slapstick comedy and is the perfect series for binge-watching after a long week of work or school. Get your coffee jelly ready and enjoy diving into the hilarious world of Saiki K.
